Everything starts with a vision
In order to get the most out of your life, you need to have a vision. A vision is a clear picture of what you want your life to be like. It’s the ultimate end result for which you are working towards through all of your efforts.
A goal is an important part of creating a vision and helps us stay on track in our daily lives. However, goals alone won't make much sense without having an overarching purpose or objective for them; this is where visions come into play!
Focus on a specific area of your life
I know that you want to become a better version of yourself, because you are reading this article. But focusing on too many things at once can feel overwhelming, and it might make you feel like you’re not progressing as fast as possible.
That’s why I recommend focusing on one specific area of your life at a time.
For example, if the area of your life is fitness and becoming your ideal weight, these are the steps you might want to take:
Be specific about what you want. Include all the senses:
VISUAL: What would you look like?
Start by visualizing yourself as the new version of yourself. Include all the senses. Go into as many specifics as possible about how things will be different for your future self. The more specific your vision is, the easier it will be to achieve.
Imagine watching yourself from a third person perspective. What would you look like? How would you dress? How would you hold yourself?
You can see yourself being your ideal weight, being fit and strong and confident in your body. You can see yourself being full of energy, vibrant and ready for any obstacle that comes your way.
Then switch into experiencing yourself from the first person perspective. What would your experience be from your own perspective?
You can visualize yourself being thinner in your mind's eye, as you are seeing yourself looking at yourself in a mirror while wearing jeans that fit perfectly. You stand confidently upright with your head held high (or leaning back slightly) so that people can see you better than before - because now they have no choice but to notice you!
AUDITORY: What would you sound like?
What would you say to yourself?
What would other people say to you?
How would you sound?
What would your voice be like?
What would your tone of voice be like?
You might imagine that you talk with a friend or a family member, sharing with them how good you feel in your body. You might hear yourself saying things about how strong and fit and energetic you are. Your voice might be a bit more confident, a voice that fits with your new, fit you. You might also hear people around you complimenting you on the changes that they noticed and how inspired they are by your progress. People around you might be even asking your for a piece of advice how to get to where you are…
KINESTHETIC: What would you feel like?
Now that you have a clear picture of how the new version would look like and sound like, let's add the element of feeling. What would you feel like being this new version?
If we are going to be anything in life, it's important to feel good about who we are. So if your new version looks and sounds like someone who is confident and makes great choices, then the feelings associated with them should be confidence and making great choices!
When I create my own ideal versions for myself (and others), I ask myself: How would I want to feel when acting as this person?
And then…how would other people want me to make them feel by being around me? In essence: how do I want others to experience themselves because of me?
You can imagine feeling so very good in your own body, you might imagine feeling lighter and freer and more energetic…you might imagine feeling more peaceful, as becoming stronger brings you better ability to deal with daily challenges…you might feel much more empowered…you might feel that people are attracted to you because you radiate around you these feelings...
Determine the obstacles - what prevents you from becoming this new version of yourself?
Once you have designed your vision, the following step is to determine the obstacles that prevent you from becoming this new version of yourself. The main reasons people can't achieve their goals are:
- They don't have a plan for achieving them.
- They don't know how to take action steps towards achieving them.
